Ephesians 6:4

Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

(v4, NIV)

Children are to obey their parents in the Lord. This goes back to the Ten Commandments where the commandment is to honor your father and your mother. Something is required of the child, but there is also something required of the father. Having children in subjection to you gives a man power that he may not be used to. Power can unfortunately be used incorrectly. In this case, fathers can be led to exasperate their children. The dictionary online says it means to make very angry or impatient; annoy greatly. The ESV says "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger..." (v4, ESV). Apparently, there is a danger for fathers to anger or annoy their children. I'm sure there will be times when the child is angry with you. However, did you, as a father, wrongly cause that to happen? Is what you're doing with your son or daughter in direct opposition to the Lord? As fathers we must raise them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. This is a heavy burden that is placed upon fathers. Now, this doesn't mean that mothers don't do any teaching or caring for their children. What it means is that fathers have responsibility over this matter.
