Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
(v15-16, NIV)
We need to live as wise people. We can't simply go about living carefree, but be careful. It is easy to make mistakes or deceive yourself. We aren't to have even a hint of sexual immorality among us. Wise people make the most of every opportunity, but the unwise do not. The unwise are not productive, but are lazy.
Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.
(v17, NIV)
Another contrast is to not be foolish but understand the Lord's will. The foolish do not understand what his will is. Instead, they simply follow their own path regardless of the will of God. Don't you want to follow God's will? Some may perceive God's will as boring or not fun or not even worth it. Do not be deceived; following God's will as beloved children is always the better choice.
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
(v18, NIV)
I had to look up what debauchery meant. It means excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures; intemperance. Excessive means too much. It's not wrong to enjoy life and the pleasures of life. However, you must ensure that it does not get between you and God. Becoming drunk on wine will lead to excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures. This is wrong, and you are not to do so. Do not fill yourself with wine; instead fill yourself with the Spirit. Why would you want to be filled with a substance that dulls your senses anyway? Again, it's not a sin to drink alcohol. However, these dangerous beverages can lead to debauchery. Why not be filled with the Spirit? It is much better to be filled with the Spirit. Living by the Spirit will produce the fruit of the Spirit.
The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
(Galatians 5:19-21, NIV)
You may notice that debauchery is in this list. This is the list opposite to the list of the fruit of the Spirit. This list that includes debauchery is the acts of the sinful nature. People who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. Do not get drunk with wine.
