Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household,
(v19, NIV)
The Gentiles are no longer separate from God's people. They have now can be brought near and can be called citizens with God's people. Through Jesus Christ and the shedding of his blood they are allowed to come into God's household.
built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
(v20-21, NIV)
This household the Gentiles are now allowed into is both for Jews and Gentiles. This household's foundation is of the apostles and prophets. The apostles had seen Jesus and been commissioned by Jesus as apostles. The prophets came sometimes prophesying the coming of Jesus but simply God's word to the people. The foundation of the apostles and prophets are what make this household. The important piece which is the cornerstone is Jesus Christ. This chief piece and important stone is what holds the household together. Without it, it would fall apart and break down. The entire household is held together by Jesus Christ who is the cornerstone. All this is to stress the importance of Jesus Christ.
And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
(v22, NIV)
Now this household both Gentiles and Jews are being welcomed into is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Also, the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We ourselves are also to be a dwelling place for God. The way in which God lives in us is by his Spirit. If our bodies are to be a household for his Spirit, we should build it the same way the household for us is being built. Our bodies or our lives should be built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Most importantly, it should have Jesus Christ as the cornerstone. Without it, our household will easily fall.
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
(1 Corinthians 6:19, NIV)
