In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
(v11, ESV)
This is very much similar to what was mentioned in the last paragraph. We are receiving good things as a result of God's plan long time ago that he is glad to do. However, this time what we receive is referred to as an inheritance. We are welcomed as adopted sons and receive an inheritance since we are part of the family. This idea is similar to Galatians 4 where Paul talks about sons who will receive an inheritance.
so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
(v12-13, ESV)
Why did God do all this? Why are we receiving an inheritance according to God's plan long time ago that he's happy to do for us? It's all for the praise of his glory.
What's interesting is that there's a distinction between those who first and those who were not. Those who were not first are those Paul is addressing as readers of this letter. However, both have believed in him and received the Holy Spirit. Both are followers of Jesus Christ and have been saved.
who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
(v14, ESV)
The Holy Spirit is God's deposit on us. It's God's proof of purchase. We have the Holy Spirit, so we know that we have been bought with the blood of Jesus Christ.
"To the praise of his glory" is repeated as it was also in verse 12. What an awesome plan and what amazing things God is doing. He is great and worthy of praise.
