far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
(v21, NIV)
This seat that God gave Jesus is far above anything else. Paul lists out all these things that this seat is far above. This seat given to Jesus is far above all rule, authority, power, dominion and title. Any sort of king or ruler or person in any sort of power or held in high esteem is below this seat given to Christ. They may seem high and they may be higher than us, but our faith is in the Lord Jesus Christ who is seated higher than them.
Someone may even think to point out that kings of the past were quite high up. They may even think of the possibility that someone in the future may come along and be greater than the seat given to Jesus. Paul simply addresses here by saying that it's not just now but in the future. There is no contest, Jesus is higher and will continue to be higher. This isn't some temporary seat which may be trumped in the future. This seat is high and will remain far above all others.
And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
(v22-23, NIV)
Not only is Jesus seated high above all others, but he is given headship over everything for the church. What's a king without something to rule? He is our Lord and savior. God gave to him headship over us. What's interesting is that what was given to him is his body. It makes sense to be given what is his body. It's as if he was going to get it all along. Why didn't he always have it? It is his body, why was it ever God the father's to give? I can only think of a few ideas. First of all, Jesus submitted himself to the will of God the father.
who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
(Philippians 2:6-11, ESV)
Jesus humbled himself and made himself nothing. However, God highly exalted him and raised him up. God raised him from the dead and raised him to be seated on high.
Jesus made himself nothing and thus gave up his body. Jesus gave up his body physically to death on the cross. Jesus also gave up his body which is the church. In this sense, his act of making himself nothing even submitted the church to the care of God the father. However, in his exaltation by the God the father, he was bestowed headship over the things of the church. This idea supports the teaching that the last will be first and the first will be last. Jesus made himself nothing but was raised up to a seat of honor. Mind you, some of these ideas are correct, but I am not 100% sure if I am speaking the whole truth. Regardless, God raised Jesus up and seated him on high.
