Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.
(v7, NIV)
We will reap what we plant. If a farmer plants in his field, he’ll reap whatever he sows. If he plants carrots, he’ll harvest carrots when they’re grown. If he planted onions, he wouldn’t expect to harvest tomatoes. So, what we sow is what we will reap.
Sometimes, we deceive ourselves when we think otherwise. We deceive ourselves when we think we can sow something and harvest something else. We mock God when we live like this, when we live trying to reap what we do not plant. God is a just God. He warns us to live a holy life and to not sin. But sometimes we think we can sin and get away without facing the consequences. Do not mock God.
The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
(v8, NIV)
Sowing from the flesh reaps corruption. Out of our flesh come our sinful desires of the flesh. This was discussed near the end of chapter 5. However, sowing to the Spirit reaps eternal life. This is similar to what was discussed at the end of chapter 5 as well. Expect to reap what you plant.
