Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."
(v13, NIV)
We were cursed for following the law. However, before Christ, we didn't have anything other than the law. By having his son die on the cross for our sins, he made a way for us to be justified by faith. Thus, we are redeemed from the curse of the law. What's interesting is that the way Jesus redeems us from the curse is by becoming a curse for us. This quote Paul uses to show that Jesus becomes cursed for us is from Deuteronomy 21:23.
He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
(v14, NIV)
As we'll see in the next section, the promise to Abraham referred to Jesus. Through his sacrifice and direction of the promise to him, we are able to receive blessing through Jesus. Everyone including the Gentiles now have a chance to receive the promise from the Spirit. This is how it is, this is how it works. It's even amazing that there is a way, so let us trust God and put our faith in him. Let us live by faith and by God's grace be justified by faith.
