Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.
(v12, NIV)
Salvation isn't a one time ticket that's simply a one shot deal. It's not like one of those shots go to the doctor to take that will protect you for the rest of your life. You can take a shot then roll around in that thing you're protected from all you want since you're protected. That's not the mentality we should have with God. It is true that he offers salvation to us and it is received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. However, once we have received it, we don't just keep living as we used to live. We were dead in our trespasses and sins, but we were saved from that. We don't just keep living in sin after being saved from it. That is our old self, but we put off our old self and put on our new self.
Paul wants to attain to the resurrection of the dead and all that entails. Paul wants to Know Christ and share in his sufferings and gain Christ. As far along he may be in some quantitative measurement, he doesn't consider himself to have ever reached his goal. Instead, he continues to press on towards the goal. Often times we feel as if we've gone as far as we can and we start to coast. We think we've grown enough and are good enough that we don't need to keep running. However, that isn't the end of the race. Continue to press on so that you may lay hold of the goal and prize.
