He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
(v2, NIV)
We are not to say we are perfect in conduct nor are we to say that we are inherently "good". If you say those things, you are a liar. Each and every single one of us has committed sin, no matter how "good" you think you are. In addition, we are all sinners by nature and are destined to destruction. Fortunately, if we do sin, we have Jesus Christ who speaks in our defense. When we sin, are to repent and turn from our sins. We can receive salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Now, this isn't a free ticket to go on sinning. Paul addresses this very point in his letter to the Romans. Do not continue in sin as some may want to continue in sin so that grace may increase.
Jesus Christ is the one who pays for our sins. If you have sinned, it's not the end of the world. He pays for your sins if you will allow him to. In addition, it's not just for you but this free gift is offered to everyone. Others are free to correct me on this since I may be wrong. Everyone in the entire world is all in the same bar. It's a pretty big bar and each and every one of us has had at least one drink. However, none of us have any money; none of us can pay for our bill. Jesus comes and he has more than enough money to pay for each and every one of us. However, he will only pay for those who would receive his offer to pay for them.
