If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.
(1-2, NIV)
Paul is calling them to unity in Christ. We are all followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. Do we not receive encouragement from being united with Christ? We definitely ire comforted and receive fellowship with the Spirit. We should realize that we are partakers in grace together, so we should be like-minded with the same love and the same spirit and purpose. By being united in this, Paul's joy is made complete. Paul rejoices in them and their devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ. The outpouring of their walk with Christ is their unity with one another; they build up the body of Christ. This outcome brings Paul's joy to completion in seeing his brothers and sisters in Christ unify in Christ.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
(v3-4, NIV)
Pride is a terrible thing. We shouldn't elevate ourselves to be above or superior to others in any way. Sometimes we think we're stronger or smarter or faster than others. We may in fact be superior to someone else in certain aspects. However, this doesn't make us worth or valued any higher than another. The ESV uses the word "significant" and the NASB uses the word "important". Just because we may be taller than someone else or wealthier than someone else doesn't mean we are more significant or important than them. Rather, or attitude should be to consider others as better or more important or more significant than ourselves. The world teaches us to be selfish and to look out for our own needs and our own interests and our own pleasure. However, God calls us to be a servant to others and consider them more important than us. Sure, we are to look out for our own personal needs. However, we must go further and look out for the interests of others. Be considerate and compassionate to others. Don't just be a selfish old Scrooge; that will gain you nothing.
