James 3:5-6
Now the tongue is being compared to a forest fire. The fire is quickly spread when it is started, even by a small spark. The tongue is not the forest, nor is it the fully matured fire that is engulfing the forest. Rather, the tongue is the tiny fire or spark that starts the forest fire. The members of our body are the forest that is set ablaze by the tongue, which is the start of the forest fire. It doesn't just affect the body, but the entire life of the body. I guess that makes sense because the body and its members are a big part of the life of the person. What's interesting is that James explains the fire as being originally set on fire by hell. The origin of this fire, though starting with the tongue, is actually originated by hell. We may think that what we're saying is good. We may even think that our speech is from God. However, it is from hell and it will set a huge fire like a forest fire. It's method of attack is through the tongue. So I guess we need to be careful with how we use our tongue, in what we say or don't say.
