I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome.
(v14-15, NIV)
What's interesting is that the free gift of grace offered by God through Jesus Christ pays debts. We do not receive salvation by works, but by grace through faith. We do not owe God anything but receive it freely. If we did owe something, it would no longer by grace. However, Paul is in debt to Greeks and barbarians, to the wise and the foolish. Jesus paid a debt we could not pay. It pays debts. The way in which Paul is in debt to others is because he did not deserve what he received. So, to not share it with others would be to say that he deserved it and they didn't. So, since Paul is obligated to them, he wants to preach the gospel to them. He is eager to share with them about this free gift of grace which he received. By sharing the gospel with them, he also hopes for the fruit of the obedience which comes from faith to be produced in them. This is what we recall from back in verse 5.
