Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”Matthew 3:13-17
Here we read how Jesus gets baptized by John. John had just spoken about the one who comes after him who is greater, and Jesus is this person. How is it that John would baptize the one who comes after and is greater than John himself? Well, John would've opposed this idea, but he ended up doing it after Jesus tells him that is "to fulfill all righteousness". I don't quite understand it, but it is part of what Jesus had to do. This was kinda like his initiation to his ministry.
We see afterwards an amazing thing that happens. God is not void of this whole thing, but is in a sense confirming Jesus and his ministry. It makes me wonder about those who witnessed this event. It must've been quite a sight to see and an obvious sign that Jesus was the real deal.
